- All new hires to the University must complete an I-9. Individuals who are currently active may require a new I-9, such as in certain circumstances when they are assigned to a federal contract or when moving from unpaid status to paid employment. Please contact E-Verify@illinois.edu PRIOR to a new hire starting work to confirm if there is an active I-9, or if a new I-9 is needed.
- The employee must complete section 1 of their I-9 on/before their first day of work for pay in the US.
- The employer must complete section 2 of the I-9 within 3 days of the employee’s first day of employment.
- Original documents are required to complete section 2 of the I-9. The employee must present original, unexpired documents within 3 days of their first day of employment; photocopies of documents to complete the I-9 are not acceptable. The employee may choose which document(s) to present, and must either provide 1 document from list A, OR 1 document from list B AND 1 document from list C. Should the list B and C option be selected, the list B document MUST contain a photograph. Should the employee present a document combination involving a social security card, the social security card MUST NOT have a restriction. If the employee does not bring the acceptable original documents within 3 days of the employee’s first day of employment, employment may be terminated.
- If the employee chooses to present an Employment Authorization Document (Form I‐766), Permanent Resident Card (Form I‐551) or U.S. passport/U.S. passport card during the Form I‐9 process, the front and back of these documents must be uploaded to Tracker. No other documents are to be scanned to Tracker.
- Please contact Denise Madden djmadden@illinois.edu if you have questions about common document combinations for your status.
